Telecommunications Field Engineer
Based between Sheffield Office, Home, Customer sites – as work dictates
Reports to: Senior Engineer, Project Managers and Senior Project Manager
Job Purpose: The Engineer is responsible for all technical and Installation aspects of any given project, and provides the link between the end customer and the PMO Team.
Dimensions: The role does not require any day to day management activities but may require Supervision of site teams and builds, and a direct interface to the end customer. The role requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to provide in depth reporting functions into respective Project and Operations Managers.
Duties/Accountabilities:
- Complete Risk Assessments and Health and Safety checks on sites
- Install, configure, commission and where required integrate customer equipment ensuring Company procedures are adhered to at all times
- Works closely with the internal PMO team and Senior Engineers
- Represent the Company whilst working with the customer Network Operations Centres resources to achieve smooth completion of works
- Provides 1st line problem solving, where possible presenting a solution, where not possible, elevating this to the Senior Engineer, Project Co-ordinator and Project Manager
- Complete Tests as per customers’ requirements and record results using pre-determined mediums, ensuring that standards are achieved
- Complete/update site records as per customers’ requirements
- Provide detailed project updates in line with customer SLA’s
- Interpret design drawings and plans clearly
- Encourage cost effective delivery from onsite teams
- Act as a mentor to more junior engineers
Special Features:
- Must be competent on wide range of networking equipment including but not limited to, Huawei, Nokia, Cisco and Meraki.
- Strong understanding of Telecommunications and Network Infrastructures
- Strong understanding of fixed line works within Telephone exchanges and roadside cabinets
- Field based role with approximately 85% of the time being spent in the field, along with time in ITI Office or Home for Report and Documentation writing
- Out of Hours and weekend work will be involved with the potential of overseas work
- Provide regular updates to PMO Team regarding progress of junior engineers.
Authority:
- If working alone or if senior engineer is not on-site, will act as lead engineer, be the point of contact for all customer queries and responsible for all site issues including Health and Safety of Staff.
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of company Health and Safety systems
- Knowledge of company Quality systems
- Understanding BT’s network, internal and external, Headend/Exchange and external cabinets
- Understanding on a wide range of Networking/RF equipment and tools
- Good understanding of media types, ADSL, Copper, Fibre, Structured cabling
- Good knowledge of Data communications
- Good knowledge of general Telecommunications i.e. SDH, Optical, Wireless – WIFI, WIMAX, LTE, 3G/4G, DAS, Small Cell
- Computer literate and able to use a wide range of software tools including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio
- Must have experience in the role/ and background experience
- Extensive field based experience
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and Product documentation
